Terror is the Order of the Day

by Benjamin W. Heineman Jr.
Directed by Tea Alagić

Terror is the Order of the Day is a bold, politically charged, and seductively human new play that reframes the French Revolution as a mirror for our current moment. It explores how fear spreads, how righteousness seduces, and how ordinary people become swept into extremism. The result is a work that feels dangerous, timely, and intensely alive.

This project unites two extraordinary artistic minds: director Tea Alagić, known for her visionary, ritual-driven theatrical language, and playwright Ben Heineman, whose creative voice emerges from a lifetime studying power, ethics, and human behavior at the highest levels of law, politics, and global governance. Together, they create a piece with intellectual voltage and visceral theatrical power.

Tea Alagić is an internationally acclaimed, multilingual director, writer, performer, and educator whose work spans continents and theatrical traditions. Born in Bosnia, Tea fled the war as a young artist- an experience that shapes her lifelong commitment to human connection, cross-cultural exchange, and the transformative potential of theater. She has directed for The Public Theater, The Old Globe, The Abbey Theatre, Goodman Theatre, National Theatre London, Baryshnikov Arts Center, La MaMa, and many others. Her world premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size became a defining example of her ability to transform text into living ritual. Her recent work includes Hamlet (Croatian National Theater Mostar), Dance Nation (Barnard), Queens (NYU), Everybody (Columbia), Fear (Lortel), and the Lincoln Center activation of Little Amal.
